Sleep With One Eye Open

Though it was recorded in four feverish days of sessions at Jack White's Third Man studio in Nashville, the album has deep roots in a serendipitous side of New York City that reveals itself at certain times of the night, when strangers become kindred spirits as clubs empty out, and only the hardiest souls stick around to keep the music playing. It's a story that begins, like so many, with a guy walking into a bar.

On Sleep with One Eye Open, Thile and Daves acknowledge history and tradition while they exuberantly defy convention; they balance the tender with the devil-may-care, emphasizing, as Thile puts it, "the slightly delinquent side of bluegrass." Recording live to two-inch analog tape and singing into one vintage microphone, the duo cut 16 tracks at Third Man, claiming the honor of being the first artists White has allowed to record there on their own. (He also let them borrow his house engineer, Vance Powell.)

Songs like "Loneliness and Desperation" and the title track emphasize rollicking, rapid-fire arrangements that often serve, in tried-and-true bluegrass fashion, to mask the most sorrowful of feelings. Daves and Thile's voices blend as seamlessly and, on tracks like "Bury Me Beneath the Willow," as plaintively-as their instruments. As Thile explains, "Mandolin and guitar and two male voices - it's such a good sound. What was important for us was to get that brother duet thing, but with this Lower East Side punk energy."

Though the sessions themselves have an appealing air of spontaneity, Sleep with One Eye Open was a project literally years in the making. As Thile explains, "All the work for this record had already been done at the jam sessions and at the shows we put on at the Rockwood Music Hall; we just had to take a snapshot of it. I think we found a way to maintain our wide-eyed wonder about this stuff and deliver it with the sincerity of people who need to play this music to feel good." Fans will no longer have to scour Facebook or Myspace hoping for news of an impromptu, semi-secret gig from this pair: Thile and Daves are finally taking their show on the road this spring, starting in May with a three-night stand at Rockwood.

Vince Gill and Tim O'Brien take care of the country and bluegrass quotient, Linda Ronstadt puts in a rare appearance on a soulful Brook Benton ballad, Los Lobos contribute a Mexican-flavored waltz, Keb' Mo' brings the blues, and the hitmaking Butcher Brothers, producers Phil and Joe Nicolo (Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Cypress Hill, Nine Inch Nails) provide the languid R&B groove for the title song, a cover of Bill Withers' classic "Use Me.! "

Standout tracks change with each listening, but some of the highpoints include the crisp blues shuffle "Tongue," the album's lone Bromberg original, with Levon Helm on drums; "You Don't Wanna Make Me Mad," featuring David on slide guitar and Dr. John on piano; the ominous slow blues, "Diggin' in the Deep Blue Sea," updated by Keb' Mo' and Gary Nicholson from Larry Davis's "Texas Flood" to address the dangers of offshore drilling, and the chipper Vince Gill - Guy Clark co-write, "Lookout Mountain Girl," the only song on which David cedes most of the lead guitar duties (to Vince, although David splits the lead with Widespread Panic's Jimmy Herring on "Old Neighborhood").

Rather than collating individual instrumental parts literally phoned in to a central location, the recording sessions for Use Me generally took place on each guest artists' home turf - in Woodstock (Levon Helm), New Orleans (Dr. John), Nashville (John Hiatt, Tim O'Brien, Vince Gill), Los Angeles (Los Lobos), and so on, to retain their regional flavors.

No matter who the producers, songwriters or accompanying musicians are on Use Me, Bromberg's expressive guitar-playing and "rippling Fred Neil-like baritone that . . . brings warm, reassuring comfort" (Rolling Stone) remain the centerpiece of the CD, diamonds in golden settings.

Forever is clearly an extension of the long-term relationships that were established in the 1970s with Return to Forever. According to Clarke, another electric RTF tour is in the works, featuring Corea, Clarke, White, Connors and Ponty. "This is actually the fourth version of Return to Forever," Clarke says. "It's come full circle with Bill coming back and the addition of Jean-Luc. After release, we're doing an RTF IV tour to go out and support the new CD. It's a total update, and it's going to be a lot of fun."

The song, entitled 'The Kind You Can't Afford', Peyroux says, is a testament to owning what money can't buy. About the visit, she recounts, "I've had a sincere desire to be in Haiti ever since I started reading Edwidge Danticat, but never did visit before the storm. It was a life-changing experience which I'll always remember, and the songs I performed there will now always have that flavor of pure music and joy in my memory." Other current collaborators include Jonatha Brooke, David Batteau, Andy Rosen, and Jenny Scheinman. The new album is due to be released June 14th, 2011, and Peyroux plans to begin touring again in the US and Europe in early spring. "I think my fans are eager to hear something different," Peyroux says, and pauses with restraint before adding, "Music has grown into another place in my mind... I am the same singer that I was as a teen, that wants to grow into music, wherever it comes from. I don't believe I've given up anything. I've added to myself." What's It All About

After nearly 40 recordings under his name, this marks the first time there is not a single Metheny composition represented. Rather, What's It All About comprises 10 classic songs, some very well known, that hold personal meanings for the guitarist.

Following the Grammy winning 2001 solo acoustic record One Quiet Night, Metheny began regularly playing the specially tuned baritone guitar he used on that album in the breaks between sound check and the show when he was on the road. "Almost every day as I worked through one well-known tune or another, various visitors or local crew people would come up to me and ask which record it was on, and I would have to say that I had never made a record like that," Metheny says. "And over the years, I have had it in the back of my mind that I should do an album of some of those tunes at some point".

As with One Quiet Night, Metheny recorded the songs on What's It All About late at night, in his New York City home over a short period of time. In selecting which ones to put to tape, Metheny says: "I wanted to record some of the music that was on my radar before I ever wrote a note of my own, or in a few cases, even before I played an instrument. I was born in 1954 and all of these songs were in the Top 40 during my childhood and early teen years. It was a period when harmony and melody were still important and viable elements in popular music. Every one of these tunes has something going on that is just hip on a musical level, no matter how you cut it. They have all stuck with me over the years".

Most of the record was made using the acoustic baritone guitar, with three exceptions: Paul Simon's "The Sound of Silence" is played on a 42-string custom made "Pikasso" guitar, Bob Spickard and Brian Carman's "Pipeline" is played on a six-string, and John Lennon and Paul McCartney's "And I Love Her" is played on a nylon string guitar.

The live album captures this iconic artist during a fascinating time in his career, when he was facing criticism and lawsuits from his then current record company for exploring a more traditionally country sound. "You can call me erratic," Young said when asked at the time about his tendency toward musical shape-shifting, "but I've been consistent about it, consistently erratic." Always celebrated for his musical versatility, A Treasure, is akin to a sonic time capsule, instantly transporting the listener to the time and place when it was made. "I love this record," Young says. "I hadn't heard these takes in 25 years, but when we unearthed them co-producer Ben Keith said, 'This is a treasure.'"

Part of what makes A Treasure so compelling is the musical contributions of The International Harvesters, with whom Young was playing at the time. Many of them were already paragons within the country music world and their notoriety has only grown in the years since. "I just love to hear those guys," Young says. "They're all country music legends." Those behind the scenes also made significant contributions to A Treasure's sonic potency. Tim Mulligan mixed and mastered the tracks. At the time these songs were recorded, Bob Sterne was the tour manager, Tim Foster ran the stage, and Larry Cragg was in charge of the band's instruments.

A Treasure will be released in several formats, including standard CD, vinyl (180gm and 140gm), digital download with and without videos, and as a deluxe CD/Blu-ray package. The Blu-ray version will feature a curated selection of video that lends context and imagistic power to the tracks. "I like to look at these old live videos and listen to what I think are the best versions of these songs," Young says. "It's fun to see what we looked like when we were playing it then."

A Treasure is Young's first release since last year's Grammy and Juno Award-winning album, Le Noise. The live album captures this iconic artist during a fascinating time in his career, when he was facing criticism and lawsuits from his then current record company for exploring a more traditionally country sound. "You can call me erratic," Young said when asked at the time about his tendency toward musical shape-shifting, "but I've been consistent about it, consistently erratic." Always celebrated for his musical versatility, A Treasure, is akin to a sonic time capsule, instantly transporting the listener to the time and place when it was made. "I love this record," Young says. "I hadn't heard these takes in 25 years, but when we unearthed them co-producer Ben Keith said, 'This is a treasure.'"

A Treasure will be released in several formats, including standard CD, vinyl (180gm and 140gm), digital download with and without videos, and as a deluxe CD/Blu-ray package. The Blu-ray version will feature a curated selection of video that lends context and imagistic power to the tracks. "I like to look at these old live videos and listen to what I think are the best versions of these songs," Young says. "It's fun to see what we looked like when we were playing it then."

The smoldering Straight Down The Line is a sly nod to rock n roll s early reputation as the Devil s music, while the blistering He Don t Live Here No More is a song about excess. The latter features Clapton on harmony vocal and electric and slide guitars alongside Robertson s soulful gut string guitar solo.

Robertson was a founding member of The Band, penning such classic songs as The Weight, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down and Up On Cripple Creek. The Band s 1976 farewell concert was documented by director Martin Scorsese in the film The Last Waltz and the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. In addition to his acclaimed solo albums, Robertson also has a long list of film credits. As Executive Soundtrack Producer for 1996 s Phenomenon, he recruited Clapton to perform Change the World, which subsequently won GRAMMY® awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. He has collaborated with Scorsese on numerous films, including Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, Casino, Gangs of New York and Shutter Island.

"I had written a song in Brisbane, Australia when I was on tour with Fleetwood Mac in 2009 called 'Moonlight - A Vampire's Dream' which was inspired by the New Moon film. We had a core group of five people who were at the heart of the creation of In Your Dreams. Dave and myself, my longtime friend and musical director, Waddy Wachtel, and my girls, Sharon Celani and Lori Nicks. It was a perfect blend,"" commented Nicks. "This was one of the most extraordinary experiences I've had making a record. It is the first album that I have had this kind of collaboration since the making of Rumours. Dave created a situation where I could be totally creative and focused on writing songs and making music. I cannot remember ever having this much fun making a record. Writing the songs and recording them in my home studio was the key element in how this music turned out. It made the whole process seem very similar to how we used to work back in the day," she concluded.

The first single is "Secret Love" written by Nicks. "It was 1976 and Fleetwood Mac was opening for Peter Frampton at the time. It was written about a forbidden relationship - not Peter and I," laughed Nicks. "I always knew that one day I was going to record the song."

Nicks is currently gearing up to join forces with fellow rocker Rod Stewart for the 16 city Heart & Soul Tour, one of the most anticipated music events of the year.
